Everything you need to know about lime paint!

Working with lime paint means going back to basics: a mineral paint that has been in use for hundreds of years. It is water-based and composed of lime, colored with natural pigments. Unlike many commercial paints, it contributes to a healthy environment in your home (solvent-free, vapor-permeable, odor-free and environmentally friendly).

Create the look

The nuances in color are determined by the number of layers, layer thicknesses and the method of application. The result is the consequence of your creativity!

Don't try to paint perfectly. Color, method of application and finish determine the effect. Even application results in a lime-matte even result. Expressive application and playing with thinning will produce a cloudy result. Read our "how to" blog for more tips!

Our lime paint is ready-to-use. Unlike some other brands, you don't have to add pigment powder yourself. This allows you to concentrate entirely on the painting itself.

How to's & F.A.Q

Read our step-by-step instructions below or find an answer to your questions in our F.A.Q. section.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Prepare the surface

Start by cleaning the surface: there should be no dust or loose parts.

It is always recommended to apply at least 1 coat of primer. This way you can be assured of good adhesion and synthetic absorption of the surface. Be sure to allow the primer to dry before painting.

2. Protect floors, surfaces and furniture

Because our lime paint is made on a water basis, you can easily clean up accidents with water directly. Since this is not fun work, it's better to cover the floor. For walls, skirting boards and ceilings that should not be painted, use high-quality painter's tape.

Press the tape firmly so that no paint gets under it. Do you want perfect alignment? Then check out the tips and tricks in the blog articles.

3. Prepare your paint and tools

Take your time to stir the paint well and stir occasionally while painting. Pour some paint into your paint bucket.

4. Apply a first coat of paint

Use our recommended brush. Pick up paint and apply a first coat. However, do not work too deliberately: start in one place and write the paint open well. You can cross the brush strokes or work in half moons or work random. For an expressive look use short brush strokes, for a calmer look you can use long brush strokes. Do your own thing for a unique result!

Once your brush is smoothed out, start in a different spot and repeat the process.

There’s no need to dilute the paint, but if you want a more extreme cloudy effect, you can dilute the layers with water (no more than 10%). Experiment in advance by doing some tests.

good to know

  • Paint a wall surface in one go, stopping halfway can cause major color differences.
  • Unlike regular paint, lime paint is darker when applied, but will become lighter after drying.
  • You can immediately rinse your brush and bucket with water and use them again!
  • Lime paint is vapor permeable and breathable which makes it more sensitive to moisture and therefore less suitable for damp rooms in direct contact with water and condensation. In that case, finish with a (transparent, matte) varnish.
